The world of international martial arts has opened its doors to talented female Muay Thai fighters. Some of these fighters have built large fan bases and are responsible for selling out every stadium and arena they fight in.

However, any fighter dreaming of success in Muay Thai boxing must fully commit to their dream and passion. We’ll discuss the skills and talents needed to compete with the world’s top-ranked female Muay Thai fighters, women like Barbara Aguiar, Marie Ruumet, and Somratsamee Manopgym.

First, we’ll examine the physical areas you’ll need to master, and then we’ll discuss the mental toughness needed to succeed as a female Muay Thai athlete.

Conditioning and Strength Training

Effective conditioning and strength training are needed for fight-ready power in the upper, core, and lower body.

For the upper body, 3-minute rope-pull rounds and partner pummel drills help build endurance in the arms and shoulders, which is useful when you’re under the pressure of a clinch.

Isometric hollow hold exercises, medicine-ball rotations, and anti-rotation planks can effectively develop core stability for knee blocks and body shots. Variations on the anti-rotation planks that change the points of contact and force you to use the muscles of your core are particularly valuable in strengthening your abdominal muscles against body shots.

For the lower body, you want to increase your explosiveness by practicing kettlebell swings, box jumps (with or without dumbbells) and sprint intervals that alternate between fast sprints and slower jogs. These exercises help build up your quadriceps and give you the explosive power you need to excel in the ring.

Core Skill Set for Female Muay Thai Athletes

The goal to strive for in female Muay Thai is timing and accuracy in striking. Develop your precision to offset any reach advantage of your opponent.

In your drills, you should practice a variety of precision strikes, including jabs, inside low kicks, and slip-counter elbows. Mixing up your striking keeps your opponent off-balance and forces you to concentrate on precisely placing your strikes.

Clinch Dominance

This is an area where women can excel, as the reach is offset when striking inside. Inside-biceps control and off-balance foot sweeps are effective weapons of elite female Muay Thai champions. Knee and elbow chains are also close-range combinations that score with judges and can change the momentum of a fight.

Strategy and Ring IQ

The more you face opponents in the ring, the more adept you’ll be at reading an opponent’s rhythm and how they move before striking. You should begin feinting to draw kicks and timing the counter-catch. You’ll also need to adapt to taller or shorter fighters and be able to vary your range management and angle exits. You’ll need to use long-guard variations effectively against fighters with a longer reach than you.

You should also develop an open-scoring awareness. Knowing the round-by-round scores as the fight progresses can help you make intelligent pacing changes and attacking decisions.

Mental Toughness and Self-belief

Female Muay Thai athletes can be some of the world’s strongest and most formidable competitors. They have had to overcome gender stereotypes in combat sports and are used to adversity. You should find a female champion role model and study footage of the way she fights to use in strengthening your own fighting style. Building a support network of other female Muay Thai fighters in your gym or workout space also provides valuable feedback on techniques and strategy.

Dealing with the Spotlight

As you hone your skills and become more competitive as a Muay Thai fighter, you’ll be invited to compete in larger forums in front of larger crowds. Putting all the lights, crowds and music aside and concentrating on your task in the ring is a skill.

You should learn to visualize the walk-in to stay calm and focused, and develop reset routines mid-fight when a strategy isn’t working. Learn the 4-breath box method of calming yourself:

  • 4 seconds of breathing in through your nose
  • 4 seconds of holding your breath
  • 4 seconds of breathing out through your nose
  • 4 seconds of holding your breath.
