Muay Thai vs. Boxing
Effectiveness of the Weapons in Muay Thai vs. Boxing
Many fans of boxing who have visited Thailand, become intrigued by the similar but different skills used in Muay Thai. However, their insufficient Muay Thai knowledge prevents them from having a full appreciation of the combat styles’ differences.
We’ll go through both styles to point out the differences and similarities between Muay Thai and boxing and provide you with different viewpoints to fully appreciate the ancient and culturally significant sport of Muay Thai.
Effectiveness of the Weapons in Muay Thai vs. Boxing
While both Muay Thai and boxing are contact sports, first-time viewers may miss some significant action during a Muay Thai bout because of the number of weapons the Muay Thai fighter uses. Muay Thai is also known as the “Art of 8 Limbs” for good reason.
A boxer’s weapons are limited to two fists, and the fists are the sole focus of attention for spectators at a boxing match. However, a Muay Thai fighter can use their fists, elbows, knees and feet against an opponent, which makes a Muay Thai bout exciting, intricate and unpredictable for the fighters as well as the audience.
Punching in Boxing vs Muay Thai
Boxers gear their entire technique towards punching. The sport focuses on the different punches that can be thrown, the power behind those punches, and how a combination of punches is used as a strategy. The boxing stance is aimed at generating power through the legs and hips and enabling boxers to throw longer-range punches.
In Muay Thai, punching is much more strategic. It’s used to set up the other weapons in a Muay Thai fighter’s arsenal: the elbows, knees, and kicks. Muay Thai punches also differ in their effectiveness. The stance has the lead foot turned slightly outward, which provides greater stability when using the different weapons, particularly the kicks. However, the stance limits the range of punches. The fighters must get closer to their opponents to deliver effective punches.
Different Punching Techniques of Muay Thai vs Boxing
Another difference is the use of punching power. In boxing, the fighters use maximum power in punching constantly, other than jabs to set up a heavier punch. Boxers also concentrate on accuracy and repeatedly aim for specific targets to wear down opponents.
In Muay Thai, there’s less emphasis on punching power, as the elbow, knees and legs are generally used to deliver the heaviest blows. Muay Thai fighters use punching mostly for strategic reasons.
Posture, Footwork and Kicking
In boxing, fighters assume a slightly sideways posture, making them a smaller target. They also carry their weight on the balls of their feet, moving side-to-side and in and out of range quickly.
In Muay Thai, the boxers stand squarely facing their opponent. This allows them to use the weapons on both sides of their body more effectively. Muay Thai fighters also often fight flat-footed, which allows for better stability when delivering kicks or using the legs defensively to block a kick.
Importance of Head Movement
Boxers keep their eyes on their opponent’s shoulders as these are the only weapons used in boxing. As punches to the head produce the most knockouts, boxers use head movement designed to duck and evade punches.
Muay Thai fighters focus on their opponent’s chest instead. This gives them a better view of all possible attacks coming their way. From this central point, they can see punches, elbows, knees, and kicks all at once without having to shift their focus.
Muay Thai fighters can’t afford to use too much head movement like boxers do. Moving the head too much to avoid punches leaves them open to knees and kicks coming from below. Instead, they keep their head more stable and move their entire body to avoid strikes.
Rhythm of the Action
Boxers tend to move and attack in a more rhythmic style and cadence, particularly in the later rounds of a bout when they start to tire. They tend to throw punches, pause their attack to rest, and then continue to punch. Their opponent can gauge when they will rest and mount an effective counterattack when they do.
Muay Thai fighters have perfected the “broken rhythm” style of combat. With so many weapons available, they can mount a more varied attack and use the broken rhythm style to keep their opponent guessing where and when the next blow will come from.
Different Scoring Systems
There are also significant differences between the scoring systems of Boxing and Muay Thai. Boxing is based on the “10-point must system.” This system uses three judges who award rounds to either fighter based on the number and power of punches landed in the round.
In Muay Thai, while the numbers on the scorecards are the same as in boxing, the judges use the numbers more as a guideline to help them keep track of who is winning the different rounds until the ultimate winner is declared.
